The Coal Sector is back in the public eye and the downgrading of 177 coal mines of Coal India Ltd. (CIL) shows the great magnitude in the seriousness of the Government towards tackling coal quality issues. Though CIL has already ramped up its production but quality continues to remain as an issue. The aim to focus on quality that make the domestic coal market more competitive in near future.

This is significant, especially at a time when the Government is planning to decrease the dependence on coal imports to preserve foreign exchange reserves, this initiative will also help in positioning India as a major coal supplier.

About Our Speaker

Alok Perti

Mr. Alok Perti, holds bachelor’s degree in science and a master’s degree in physics from the University of Allahabad. He also holds master’s degree in social planning & policy in developing countries from London School of Economics, United Kingdom. In 1977, joined Indian Administrative Services and has worked in various capacities with the Central Government and the Assam Government for several years.

Mr. Alok Perti has previously been the post holder of eminent positions namely Coal Secretary, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Defence, Director Ministry of Health and IAS Officer, Government of India (GOI). Even after his retirement, the association with the Coal sector continues since he is currently serving as the Chairman of Coal Preparation Society of India (CPSI).

His most remarkable work journey has been in the Ministry of Coal, where he worked as Addl. Secretary, Special Secretary and Secretary. During his stint in the Ministry, he had introduced GCV based grading and pricing system in the coal industry. He also notified the rules for introducing the procedure for the allotment of coal blocks through the bidding route.

Mr. Perti’s tenure with the Ministry of Defence and Coal, he was director on the Board to associate with several prestigious Public Sector companies which includes Coal India Limited, Bharat Dynamics Ltd, Mazagon Dock Ltd, Goa Shipyards Ltd., Garden Reach and Shipbuilding Engineers Ltd, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Bharat Electronics Ltd and Neyveli Lignite Corporation Ltd.
