Venue:New Delhi, India

Power is one of the most important aspects of the infrastructural development and growth of any economy. Be it agriculture, commerce and industry, or trade and service sectors, all need power for their respective growth. The Indian power system is one of the fifth largest and the most complex one. India, one of the fast growing economies in the world, also stands third in electricity production, with the electricity demand expected to touch approx. 1900 billion units by 2020.

In order to meet the increasing energy demand, the Government of India has set ambitious and aggressive goals like 24X7 Power to all households by 2019. The government along with the policy makers, investors and thought leaders have chalked out various plans to meet the target, keeping in mind the environment and socio-economic implications. Thus renewable energy is now looked upon as an alternate source of energy to generate electricity.

The Economic Times understands that the development in the power sector will be fundamental to the economic growth. With this in purview we, at The Economic Times, bring to you the 3rd Annual “Economic Times Power Focus Summit” to ponder, deliberate and overcome the challenges of the power sector. Electricity is the cleanest fuel at the user-end and a key driver in the economic development of a nation. Although independent India has taken up the cause of electrification of the entire country on priority right from 1948, large parts of the country still remain in darkness! Over 200 million people have no access to electricity and most regions experience frequent power cuts and poor quality of supply. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has committed to provide 24×7 reliable supply of electricity to all the citizens in the next 5 years. In order to achieve this noble objective several targeted programs have already been launched by Government of India which include: (1) DeenDayalUpadhyaya Gram JyotiYojana with an investment of US$ 7 billion, (2) Integrated Power Development Scheme that covers 5000 towns with an investment of US$ 6 billion, (3) North Eastern Regional Power System Improvement Project (NERPSIP) with an investment of US$ 1 billion, (4) New RE Program with a target of 175 GW by 2022 and investment commitment of US$ 260 billion, (5) 100 Smart Cities and Rejuvenation of 500 towns where smart grids will provide clean and sustainable energy, (6) National Mission on Electric Mobility with a target of 6-7 electric vehicles by 2022; and (7) National Smart Grid Mission (NSGM) that will take up development of smart grids on fast track in coordination with the above programs.

Besides on the policy side also several measures are taken to implement the above programs successfully. These include an Amendment to the Electricity Act 2003 (which is in the Parliament presently) that will usher in an era of retail competition in electricity distribution; a new Renewable Energy Act that will soon be placed in the Parliament. Model Smart Grids Regulations have already been approved by the statutory body of Forum of Regulators which will pave way for each state electricity regulatory commissions to issue state specific smart grid regulations. With all these fast paced actions India has emerged as the prime destination for smart grids and smart cities.

The pace at which Infrastructural development is booming globally in the current era, seems unstoppable. Taking cue from this, developing nations too are laying special emphasis on the growth of Infrastructure as they are aware that in order to become an economic powerhouse, emphatic rise is this sector is indeed critical. In an emerging economy like ours, owing to the humungous surge in urban population, infrastructure is growing more outdated thus forcing the Government to take corrective actions as rapid population in urban areas is pushing already inadequate infrastructure further beyond its capacity.

Hence there is an ongoing need to organize & accelerate the development of this sector wherein a concept like Smart City seems more viable & feasible for a consistent & augmented growth from the perspective of information network and big data use to improve the accessibility & efficiency of infrastructure. Through initiatives like Smart City & AMRUT Mission the current govt. is laying greater emphasis on building this sector as it knows that growth of Tier II & Tier III cities along with Roads, Railways, Port & Sea Infrastructure is indeed imperative for a sustainable development & maintaining an equilibrium on per capita density.
