There are 4 types of casing centralizers used:

  • Bow Spring Centralizers: They are larger than the wellbore, thus providing complete centralization in vertical or slightly deviated wells. They have flexible bows which can pass through narrow hole sections and then expand in the targeted sections.
  • Rigid Centralizers: They are made to fit a specific casing or hole size and are smaller than the wellbore size. They are made out of solid steel bars or cast iron with a fixed blade height.
  • They include both the features of bow spring and rigid centralizers. They are made of flexible doublSemi-rigid centralizers:e crested bows which enable them to compress through the tight spots and severe doglegs.
  • Mold on centralizers: The mold on centralizer blades of required length and angle can be applied directly to the outer diameter of the casing string. They are made of carbon fiber ceramic materials.

Each centralizer is hinged so that it can be easily clamped on to the outside of the casing and secured by a retaining pin. The centralizer also has a stop collar which prevents its movement up and down the casing.

The effectiveness of a centralization program is defined by a term called “standoff” which describes the extent to which the pipe is centered. Placing too many centralizers on the casing string increases the drag during tripping in or tripping out the pipes. On the other hand, too few centralizers on the casing string will not ensure proper sealing.
