Tight Oil Market: Developments, Opportunities and Market Outlook [2016-2026]

The conventional easy oil is depleting at a faster rate and its end is near. To maintain the production and meet the ever rising global oil demand, the oil & gas companies have to drill deeper and produce oil from the deep seated reserves. With increasing depth below the earth’s surface, the rocks become more consolidated due to more overburden pressure. This results in low permeability reservoir rocks at large depths below the earth’s surface. Tight oil is the conventional crude oil found in these low permeability reservoirs. The oil from these reservoirs will not flow into the wellbore until advanced drilling and completion processes are applied, hence termed as tight oil.

Tight source rocks are seated all over the world including large amount of tight oil present in shale rocks. The tight oil market is expected to govern the petroleum industry as the tight reserves will be the major oil reserves in the future. The tight oil market is estimated to be about 78 billion USD and is expected to grow at a CAGR of XX %.

The types of oil and gas deposits are classified into different categories called plays which are further differentiated on the basis of geology and the technology required to produce the oil contained in it. There are two types of tight oil plays:

  • Halo Play: In some oil fields, the fringe regions or halo surround the oil containing reservoirs. The reservoir properties in this type of play are different due to which the oil is unable to flow.
  • Geo-stratigraphic play: This type of play describes a permeable oil formation being surrounded by rock lithologies having zero or very low permeability. These surrounding low permeability rocks prevent the oil from flowing into the wellbore.
  • The rock material is generally organic rich shale which is containing oil. The oil is unable to flow as shale has veryShale Oil play: low permeability.

The tight oil extraction involves advanced technologies as compared to conventional light oil extraction. The most common technologies include:

  • Multi-Stage Hydraulic fracturing: This method is employed after proper development of well (ready to produce) as in case of oil & gas production. This technique involves injection of “frac fluid” at very high pressure into the wellbore through perforations in order to fracture the shale formation. The shale gas thus starts flowing through the path created connecting the formation and the wellbore.
  • Horizontal Well: Horizontal drilling provides more drainage area and the well is connected to more of the producing shale gas. Hence, more production and greater depletion is achieved by horizontal drilling.

For a good production of tight oil, horizontal drilling coupled with multi-stage hydraulic fracturing is employed. The global tight oil production is expected to be 5.02 million barrels in 2016 and is expected to grow constantly.

The depletion of shallow oil reserves and rise in global energy demand is expected to drive the tight oil market at a very high rate. The tight oil generally extracted is very light oil. This light oil is difficult to process and transport, which is one of the factor acting as a restraint to the market. Also, the production of sulfides in variable amounts along with tight oil is making the companies cautious. The opportunities in the market lies in more advanced hydraulic fracturing techniques along with modifications in completion designs, controlling pollutants accompanied with oil production, etc.

The profiles and the comprehensive operational study of various key players in Tight Oil market like Total S.A, Royal Dutch Shell Plc, Chevron Corporation, British Petroleum Plc, etc. have been well analysed and included in the report.
