Shale Gas Market: Developments, Opportunities and Market Outlook [2016-2026]

It is rightly said,” We’ve embarked on the beginning of the last days of the age of conventional oil & gas”. With the conventional and easy oil & gas being depleted, the industry is looking for unconventional sources of energy to meet the rising global energy demand. Shale gas is one such source of energy that is present in enormous amounts in the earth’s crust. Shale is the most abundant sedimentary rock accounting for about 70% of the earth’s crust. The unconventional natural gas trapped in these negligible permeability shale formations is known as the shale gas.

The discovery of shale gas was a trigger to the energy revolution as the shale gas has a huge potential to meet the current energy demands. The shale gas market is estimated to be valued at 74.85 billion USD and is approximated to increase at a CAGR of XX% with increasing thirst for energy.

Some of the benefits of shale gas production are:

  • Shale gas is connected with less carbon emissions as compared to other unconventional energy sources like coal
  • Shale gas could decrease global energy costs because of massive shale gas production
  • Shale gas provides cleaner energy options as compared to coal.

The production of shale gas is very difficult as the permeability of shale reservoirs is negligible preventing the gas to flow into the drilled well. The shale gas production involves high amount of water as it has to be injected regularly. Hence, shale gas can be produced by using two technologies:

  • Hydraulic fracturing: This method is employed after proper development of well (ready to produce) as in case of oil & gas production. This technique involves injection of “frac fluid” at very high pressure into the wellbore through perforations in order to fracture the shale formation. The shale gas thus starts flowing through the path created connecting the formation and the wellbore.
  • Horizontal Well: Horizontal drilling provides more drainage area and the well is connected to more of the producing shale gas. Hence, more production and greater depletion is achieved by horizontal drilling.

The combination of the above two technologies can increase the production of shale gas substantially. These two technologies have been discussed and explained in detail in our exclusive report.

The global shale gas production is expected to be 5130 billion cubic feet in 2016 and is expected to grow constantly. It is estimated that North America alone has about 1000 trillion cubic feet of recoverable shale gas which is enough to meet its energy demand for around 50 years. According to Schlumberger, India alone has around 600-2000 trillion cubic feet of shale gas reserves with the amount of recoverable shale gas still unknown. Some companies estimate around 200 trillion cubic feet of shale gas that can be recovered from the Indian basins.

The abundance of shale gas reserves with its potential to serve the demand, the transition from conventional to unconventional sources of energy with depleting oil & gas reserves, more technically sound drilling technologies have been the key drivers of the shale gas market. Production of shale gas is connected with significant carbon emissions and leakage of methane gas. With strict environmental policies, these environmental hazards can cause restraints to the shale gas market. Also, the significant decline of development of renewable energy market with development of shale gas market has also been one of the restraining factors. The opportunities in the shale gas market lies in cleaner production of shale gas without causing any environmental concerns, research & development in the shale gas technology, etc.

The profiles and the comprehensive operational study of various key players in Shale Gas market like Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, BP plc, BHP Billiton Limited, Cabot Oil and Gas, ConocoPhillips, Chesapeake Energy Corporation, ExxonMobil, and Total SA, etc. have been well analysed and included in the report.
