Oil & Gas Accumulators Market: Developments, Opportunities and Market Trends [2016-2026]

Pressure is the most vital parameter that needs to be controlled in an oil & gas operation. The primary equipment used for this purpose is an oil & gas accumulator. An accumulator is a pressure storage device that stores the potential energy of an incompressible fluid held under pressure by external source acting against a dynamic force. The external source can be a spring, a raised weight or a compressed gas while a dynamic force can come from various sources in an oil & gas operation. Moreover, accumulators help in smooth running of all the Oil and Gas operations. Some of the benefits that an accumulator provides are listed below:

  • Lower installed system costs
  • Less leakage and maintenance costs
  • Improved performance
  • Reduced Noise Levels
  • Flexible design approaches
  • Reduced Energy costs

With so many benefits provided by a single accumulator unit, the companies see a great potential in the accumulator market. The global oil & gas accumulator market is approximately valued at 1.07 billion USD in 2016 and is estimated to grow at a CAGR of XX%.

An accumulator is a cylindrical chamber which is nothing but a sealed container. The hydraulic pump pumps the fluid into this container in response to external force. The operation of an oil & gas accumulator can be grouped into six stages:

  • Stage A: The accumulator is empty and hydraulic system is not pressurized
  • Stage B: The accumulator is pre-charged
  • Stage C: The hydraulic system is pressurized
  • Stage D: The system pressure reaches its peak and the accumulator is filled with fluid according to its design capacity
  • Stage E: System Pressure falls
  • Stage F: Minimum system pressure is reached.

The various types of accumulators flourishing in the market are:

  • Weight Loaded or Gravity Accumulator: It is a vertically mounted cylinder with a large weight which is raised when the hydraulic fluid is pumped into the system. This weight is used to apply pressure on the piston that generates a pressure on the fluid side of the piston.
  • Spring Loaded Accumulator: This type of accumulator stores the potential energy in the form of a compressed spring. The piston moves up causing the spring to compress as the hydraulic fluid is pumped into the system.
  • Gas Loaded Accumulator: This is the primary type used by the oil & gas industries. The force is applied to the oil using compressed air, nitrogen, etc. These are often used with water or high water based fluids using compressed gas as charge. Furthermore, the gas loaded compressors can be classified as follows:
  • Piston accumulator: In an accumulator cylinder, the fluid area and the gas area is separated by a metal piston with tight seals.
  • Bladder Accumulator
: In an accumulator cylinder, the fluid area and the gas area is separated by a flexible bladder.
  • Diaphragm accumulator: The flexible metal diaphragm is used as a separating element inside the accumulator cylinder. They are designed in three versions: screwed execution, forged execution and welded execution.
  • Each type of accumulator has its own advantages and limitations. The structure and the operation of each type of accumulator have been explained broadly in our exclusive report.

The accumulator finds it’s applications in the oil & gas industry in the following ways:

    • Blowout Preventers
    • Reciprocating Mud Pumps
    • Fluid Dispensing
    • Shock Absorbers
    • Weight Balancing
    • Pressure tests etc.

The increasing pressure anomalies, complex operations, increasing hazards etc. are the key drivers of the oil & gas accumulator market. Unlikely, the volatile prices of oil and gas are hampering the overall oil & gas market, which in turn acts as a restraining factor to the accumulator market. Better pressure maintenance during various operations, advancements in accumulator size reduction, etc. are some of the opportunities lying in the oil & gas accumulator market.

The profiles and the comprehensive operational study of various key players in the Oil & Gas Accumulator market like Accumulators Inc., Airmo Inc., Bosch Rexroth Corporation, Bolenz & Schafer Gmbh, Eaton Corporation, Hydril Pressure Control, Hannon Hydraulics, Hydac International Gmbh, Nippon Accumulator Co. Ltd., Parker Hannifin Corporation, Pressure Technologies, Tobul Accumulator Inc, etc. have been well analysed and included in the report.
