Managed Pressure Drilling Market: Development, Opportunities and Market Outlook (2016-26)

Oil and Gas industry is ever-growing and constantly evolving. The growing demand of energy in today’s society has steered forward the oil and gas industry into harnessing unconventional and novel approaches to tackle the various engineering problems, effectively and efficiently. Growing exploration and production activities, especially in unconventional reservoirs has called in the need of developing drilling practices which are designed to handle operations which can be problematic for conventional drilling techniques.

Managed pressure drilling is an unconventional drilling technology used in order to overcome the problems produced by downhole pressures. It is used in cases where the wellbore integrity is threatened if conventional hydrostatic over-balance method is implemented. In most scenarios, conventional drilling prospects have sufficient margin between pore pressure and fracture pressure, also known as the drilling window. Drilling window accounts for a bottom-hole pressure without regards to the presence of annular friction pressure, resulting in the possibility of primary well control by conventional methods. However, unconventional drilling prospects exist where the drilling window is very narrow. So narrow, that the fluctuation in bottom-hole pressure caused by mud pump operation threatens wellbore integrity. These types of unconventional plays are ideally suited for managed pressure drilling.

The tremendous growth in exploration and drilling activities, especially in unconventional reservoirs across the globe marks a substantial growth in Managed Pressure Drilling Market. The Market had an estimated worth of 3.97 Billion dollars in 2016, and is growing at a steady rate of XX% every year. Our extensive and in-depth analysis concludes that the market is booming and suggests that it will eventually reach an approximated net worth of xx billion dollars by 2026.

Technological and Service overview:

Managed pressure drilling is an effective way to solve problems cause by variation in bottom-hole pressure caused by either mud pumping operations or by other fluctuations in downhole pressure while drilling.

MPD equipments are plumbed into the mud circulating system present in the drilling rig, creating a closed atmosphere in the wellbore. This provides an additional surface backpressure value while calculating the bottom-hole pressure. Surface backpressure can then be altered as required to solve loss of drilling fluid into the surrounding subsurface formationreservoir influx. Simply put, MPD helpsin adjusting the surface backpressure in order to maintain a constant bottom-hole pressure within the drilling window.

The variation in downhole pressure caused by mud pump operation is also accounted for with managed pressure drilling. When pump is started, MPD reduces the applied surface backpressure simultaneously, proportionally to the addition of annular friction pressure.

The inverse scenario occurs when the mud pumps are shut. As annular friction pressure is decreased, surface backpressure is added proportionately. This results in constant bottom-hole pressure maintenance and wellbore stability. Therefore, MPD can be used to adjust surface backpressure therefore, providing solution to numerous causes of fluctuation in bottom-hole pressure.

MPD does adjust surface backpressure during the removal and addition of annular friction pressure in the well profile. However, some variations still occur in bottom-hole pressure calculations. The pressure variation is more frequent while making a connection, which is adding pipe to the drill string at the rig floor. A solution to this problem is to use MPD to re-direct the direct drilling fluid flow away from the standpipe, thereby, providing the capability to maintain the mud pumps in operation at all times. This is termed as diversion mode

MPD also plays an important role in extended reach drilling operation as it allows exploration and production activities to reach True Depth (TD) without encountering the equivalent circulating densities inherent to those operations. Therefore, managed pressure drilling creates opportunity for advancement in drilling prospects that were once economically infeasible or non-viable.
