Initiatives taken by ONGC to enhance exploration activities

ONGC's exploration programme is very dynamic and vibrant. Activities in accordance with the directions set forth in "India Hydrocarbon Vision-2025" are pursued relentlessly to achieve the long-term strategic objectives.

As a strategy, exploration input is being optimized based on risk-reward perception but, at the same time, it is invested optimally in different categories of basins requiring different levels of intellectual and, physical inputs.

Areas have been prioritized both for exploration input planning and knowledge building for bringing more basins on the hydrocarbon map of India. The exploratory activities of ONGC in the country during 2002-07 progressed with the X-Plan exploration programme which envisaged.....click on the above link to get the detailed note.

In addition to crude oil and natural gas, ONGC's product-line also includes value added products, namely, LPG, Naphtha, Kerosene, ATF, HSD, LSHS and C2-C3 (Ethane-Propane).

ONGC resorts to direct marketing of some of its products in line with the Govt. guidelines on the subject in addition to marketing through OMCs at market determined prices. As per Govt. guidelines, Domestic LPG and PDS Kerosene are-continued to be supplied to PSU Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) at Refinery Transfer Prices fixed by Industry.

Due to domestic surpluses of Naphtha caused by steadily increasing availability of Re-gasified LNG (RLNG), ONGC has been resorting to direct exports ex-Hazira and JNPT in addition to sale in the domestic market.

Product-wise marketing practices for various products of ONGC details can be had by clicking on the above link.

Justification for retention of additional blocks by CIL (September 2008)

CIL had carried out an exercise in 2004 for identification of blocks required for maintaining the production at XI Plan level up to 2036-37. A total of 290 additional blocks were identified. The total reserves to be retained by CIL, which together with the then existing mines and projects had a total resource of around 93 Billion tonnes. However, in 2006, CIL was advised to retain only those blocks which were projected for production by XI plan and relinquish the remaining blocks for captive allocation. In the process, 48 CIL blocks (40 explored and 8 unexplored) which could not be brought to production by the terminal year of XI Plan, had to be left for captive allocation.

.
Issues regarding formation of a ECoS to recommend Proposal of CIL to invest abroad (October, 2008)

On account of limited availability of recoverable coking coal reserves and near absence of high grade low ash thermal coal reserves in the country, efforts are required to obtain these grades of coal from international sources through imports. Further, under the New Coal Distribution Policy, CIL has been given the mandate to meet the entire domestic requirement of coal in the policy and it envisages that in order to meet the domestic requirement, Coal India Limited (CIL) may have to import coal as may be required from time to time.
