Introduction India falls in (UDCs) underdeveloped country’s category and the first car is still a dream for large number of population , people really enjoy long drives here but the percentage of people actually looking forward to long drives, is quite low and reason behind is poor road conditions and lack of facilities available on the highways. Actually wayside amenities are one of the biggest reasons which can make travel a joyful memory but due to the absence of amenities it discourages people to take road travel especially when they are traveling with their family. Under the wayside amenities programme by road ministry, it envisages setting up user-friendly facilities for travelers on national highways including parking facilities, restaurants/food courts/low cost dhabas, fuel stations, small repair shops, telephone facility also wi-fi, ATMs, rest places for short stays, toilets for ladies and men also medical aid and chemist shops and helipad facilities. Salient Features •It is essential that the wayside amenities should be planned and developed along with expressways and it also connects all projects for 4-laning / 6-laning under NHs. •The Facilities to be owned by Government operating / construction agencies. •The concept of way side amenities is based on lease on profit sharing basis with private companies. •Allocation of certain facilities in the wayside amenities solely to encourage local small scale business on financial support basis. Why we need this:
Wayside amenities are essential for tourists, passengers and heavy long route commercial vehicles as well. The absence of amenities expose truck drivers life to high risk because truck drivers don't have access to a reasonable place to take rest, they usually sleep in trucks or prefer to cover stretches as much as they can. Government Initiatives:
•Now there will be a stops for relaxation and refreshment at every section of 50-km stretch on national highways
•Also, there will be a concept for using renewable energy like solar power and wind power to convert food waste for cooking gas and generate road side energy sources.
•To implement such facilities the authorities keep asking field officers to identify suitable land to acquire for developing wayside amenities.
•NHAI has requested Oil Marketing (PSUs) companies to provide proper toilet facilities at their retail outlets
Infraline Energy always support such initiatives which makes for a better India.
Success so far:
The concept actually is not very new, under “Road Sector Objectives” of 10th Plan (2002-07) it was proposed to develop amenities along road side. Keeping this concept alive and more practical recently government proposed four laning of highway connecting Goa and Mumbai including around 1,300 roadside amenities with helipads, outlets selling local products , and government planning to spend 5000 crore in four packages to develop this facility.
Future Planning:
In a move to make travel on highways a better experience, road transport ministry has executed the roadmap for creating wayside amenities for car and bus users and truckers also. The first lot of such facilities with exclusive restaurants and food courts, , internet , ATM, child care facilities and rest room for short refreshment/relaxation would be ready in coming years along all major highways.
