Indian roads sector is in the reviving stage after roads ministry executed many new policies and programme for its betterment , now the investment opportunity is too high and private players are taking interest in new projects , recent years are showing growth era for the sector . GST Impact on Transport and Logistics • GST will increase demand for high capacity trucks and it will lead to reduction in transportation costs • It will also ensure flawless Interstate flow of goods which is expected to directly speed up demand for logistics services • GST Impact : Truck saves 8 hrs on Chennai-Delhi run • According to truck owners and logistics providers GST not only saved time, it also reduced costs National Highway Length Added in Last Three Years One of the prestigious programme under roads ministry is Bharatmala Pariyojana Total proposed road length under Phase – I of Bharatmala Pariyojana is 24,800 kms Details shown below: Inter-corridor & feeder Routes 6,000 Expressways 800 Border & International connectivity roads 2,000 National Corridors Efficiency Programme 5,000 Economic Corridors 9,000 Coastal & port connectivity roads 2,000 Remaining National Highways under NHDP 10,000 Key Catalyst for increasing demand for Roads Sector in India • Higher individual discretionary spending has led to increased spending on cars, motorbikes and scooters • Growing domestic trade flows have led to a rise in commercial vehicles and freight movement • Increasing financing on vehicle loans • Road’s traffic share of the total traffic in India has grown from 13.8 per cent to 65 per cent in freight traffic and from 32 per cent to 90 per cent in passenger traffic over 1951–2017 Private Funding Being Encouraged To Reduce Finance Constraints In May 2017, the Road Ministry signed 34 MoUs with investment potential of around US$ 29.74 billion with private and public companies such Adani Logistics, Ascendas, Chennai Port Trust, etc., to improve multi-modal logistics. Future Prospects Remain Bright for the Roads Sector In India, roads remain the most important mode of transport, responsible for around 80 per cent of the passenger traffic and 65 per cent of the freight traffic, total number of vehicles in India increased at a CAGR of 9 per cent during the period of FY06-17, from 10 million to 25 million Bifurcation of Vehicle by Category Two wheelers contribute 78 percent of total vehicle population , but in recent times four wheelers population is growing faster because of high income growth rate which leads to more traffic congestion and rise in pollution level for this government is planning to get electric vehicle by 2030 to reduce fuel consumption demand and to save environment as well.
