Summary

The Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd has commissioned the 2000-mw HVDC bipole east south interconnector transmission system connecting Talcher in Orissa and Kolar in Karnataka. It traverses   Orissa,   AP,   Karnataka   and Tamil Nadu to form the longest HVDC transmission line in Asia. The line consists of about 2,100 km of transmission lines comprising 1400 HVDC and 700 km of AC lines, 5,651 towers, 11 pile foundations and river crossing towers. The project has been completed in a record 33 months, 9 months ahead of schedule, saving Rs 7 billion from the approved cost.
