Summary

  • The rising prices of LPG has compelled households, mostly in rural areas, to depend on wood as fuel. This has in turn reduced forest cover in Aurangabad. Green activists have termed the growing deforestation disastrous for the ecosystem.

  • Bharati Dehade, a homemaker in Harsul area in the outskirts of the city, said that she had received gas cylinder and stove under the Ujwala Yojana of the central government, but her family is not able to afford cooking gas. Bharati and her husband work at a brick kiln to support themselves. “We cannot afford cylinder refill of Rs 800-900. The wood is readily available, so we use that for cooking,” Dehade said.
