Summary

  • The COVID-19 pandemic-led lockdown which led to about 50 per cent reduction in air pollution in Delhi has resulted in unusually high levels of sunlight reaching the solar panels, according to a recent study.

  • The study said that in late March, the city’s PV installations received 8.3 per cent more sunlight than in previous years and would continue to generate record amounts of electricity as long as air pollution levels stay low.

  • Scientists expect the same to be true for urban PV installations in other cities with high air pollution levels and COVID-19 related restrictions, for example, in Kolkata, Mumbai, Wuhan, Dhaka, etc.
